General information

Membership ensures a strong voice for Canadian physiatrists through the association's representatives to several bodies including the Canadian Medical Association, and the National Specialty Societies and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The CAPM&R also has a liaison with the Canadian Congress of Neurological Sciences.

There are close links between the association and the Canadian Physiatrists Research and Development Foundation which sponsors the Research and Essay contests, the Visiting Professorship Program, and other programs of financial support for young physiatry researchers.

Members also benefit from the work done by the many committees of the association which include the Continuing Professional Development Committee, the Education Committee, and the Research Committee. CAPM&R also selects a Maintenance of Certification representative for the specialty. The association has an official quarterly newsletter, CAPM&R News, which is posted on the website.

Criteria for membership

Certified specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation can become active members.

Other medical practitioners may join as associate members. This includes physicians from other specialty fields such as rheumatology, orthopedic surgery and neurosciences.

Residents are encouraged to join as associate members in training and benefit from much lower membership dues. Medical students who plan to specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation may join as medical student members.

Physiatrists, other physicians, and medical scientists residing outside Canada may join as corresponding members.
