Education Committee  Report for June 2000 – May 2001

The Education committee last met on June 05, 200 at Mont Tremblant, Quebec. There was extensive discussion at the meeting regarding the advisability of the research committee and the education committee combining as one. Ultimately the research committee was re-established with a separate chair and membership.

The guidelines for submission for the Essay contests were reviewed and revisions suggested at the last meeting. These revised guidelines will be brought forward for approval at the next committee meeting on June 13, 2001. Residents should review the guidelines before preparing essays for the 2002 Essay Contest.

There were nine submissions for the Resident Essay Contest in 2001. Dr. Dhiren Naidu was awarded the prize for his essay “Thermoregulation in Spinal Cord Injury.” We look forward to hearing Dr. Naidu’s speak to this topic in Halifax.

There were five submissions for the Student Essay Contest. The prize was awarded to Mr. Michael Payne from the University of Western Ontario for his essay, “Stroke Rehabilitation: tPA’s neglected big brother.” The Physiatrists in London also get recognition for consistently encouraging the students to enter the contest.

The topic for the medical education special interest group in Halifax will be “Feedback: How to give it and how to get it.” This interactive workshop will be organized by Drs. Meridith Marks and Suzan Dojeiji.

Dr. Meridith Marks will be stepping down as Chair of the Education Committee as of July, 2001. She will remain an active member on the committee, with a particular interest in post-graduate education and faculty development.
