CAPM&R Continuing Professional Development Committee
Report for July 2002 – June 2003

Despite the fact that the committee has only been meeting face to face at the Annual Meeting forum, the work of the committee continues throughout the rest of the year.  A subgroup of Section 1 CPD Accreditors was created at the 2002 meeting and this group has reviewed all applications submitted for Section 1 Approval throughout the rest of this year.

CAPM&R continues to hold its status as an Accreditation Provider until March 2004.  Recognising that there will be some form of re-certification process put in place by the RCPSC Office of Professional Development, the CPD Committee recommended to the CAPM&R Executive that the NSS pursue continued status.  This is the status that allows CAPM&R to sponsor its own educational activities (internal approval system) as well as approve applications submitted for Section 1, Group Learning Activities, for medical and non-medical groups educational activities. (external approval system).  Having the Executive support of this pursuit, the committee has set the next year’s goals and objectives in keeping with the work that needs to be continued in order to assure re-certification.  Specifically, continuing to improve and update our assessment strategies related to Physiatrist’s learning needs and the evaluation system used at our scientific meetings are the two areas that will be actively addressed.

As a long term goal, the CPD Committee continues to see value in the possibility of development of a Self assessment Exam/tool that would meet the criteria of Section 3.

Dr. Judy Trotter will assume the position of Chair of the committee having been in the position of Vice Chair since our last Annual Meeting.  As one of her first tasks, she will be reaffirming the interest of those presently listed as members of the CPD Committee.  Of course, any other individuals who have interest would be welcomed to join the committee membership.

Respectfully submitted,
Denyse Richardson,
Chair
