CAPM&R Continuing Professional Development Committee- Report for June 2000 – May 2001

There has been a flurry of activity this past year. Many telephone calls, emails and paper inquires have been responded to by both the office of the Secretariat and also Dr. Denyse Richardson in her office. Some of these inquiries have been from non-members of CAPM&R and this needs to be addressed for future management. The committee has been working electronically and has not met face to face but will be meeting twice at the upcoming Annual Meeting in Halifax.

Dr. Denyse Richardson submitted, on behalf of the committee and the CAPM&R membership, at the direction of the Board, an application for status as a RCPSC Accredited Provider of CPD (continuing professional development) activities. This status was granted in February 2001, for a period of 3 years. Of the 8 Principles of the Program that an Accredited Provider must satisfy, the Review team identified 3/8 (needs assessment, evaluation, and co-sponsorship policy) that were provisionally compliant and the committee will be further addressing these areas to strive for full compliance for the time of re-certification.

This Accreditation Provider Status allows for CAPM&R to sponsor their own educational activities (internal approval system) as well as approve applications submitted for Section 1, Group Learning Activities, for medical and non-medical groups educational activities. (external approval system). The committee will be recommending for approval by the CAPM&R Board that a charge be levied for this service.

Dr. Richardson, as Chair of the CPD Committee has reviewed many (20+) applications in this past year. Dr. Judy Trotter also reviewed an application in her role as a member of the CPD Committee. A further expansion of the number of reviewers will be discussed in Halifax.

Present committee membership is as follows: (any other volunteers are welcomed)

Denyse Richardson, Chair
Hugh Anton, Specialty Committee Representative

Pankaj Dhawan, member
Judy Trotter, member
